On the Clintwood-WC matchup (if it does indeed happen), I have no doubt that no one in our region fields the speed or talent that the Generals possess,but I promise you that WC will not face anyone that will play as physical or hit you in the mouth the way that Clintwood will. If the Wave can withstand the early charge,they will wear WC down IMO. I think it will be a barn-burner.
I don't even think it will be close, but I still would love to watch it because I know the Wave will be playing with all the heart in the world. I'd love to see them prove me wrong . . very wrong!
Only game that matters is the game in front of you...no use worrying about the state game when you're not even there yet.

You realize they whipped Gretna who has D1 Talent on the line right?
Goodness Gretna has a D1 prospect on their line? I wouldn't have thought that, of course I don't get to pay attention to the line too often.
Bennett Fulper (sp?) is the kids name, I know he's gotten a look from Maryland.
I'd love to see Fulper and Hull matchup, shame CW had to drop.

Most football coaches will tell you that a team's success starts with what kind of production that they get out of the players in the trenches. Assuming that is true, Gretna Head Coach Chris Thurman has to be looking forward to the 2008 season because his line is anchored by two outstanding linemen in Bennett Fulper and Ethan Winn.
Both are three-year starters for a Gretna Hawks program which has put up a 34-3 record over the course of those seasons and each has been an impact player for the Hawks.
"Both are big, strong kids," says the coach, "they took their lumps freshman year, but since then they've more than handled their own with everyone that they've had to play."
Bennett Fulper is a 6-foot-4, 285-pound center / defensive tackle who projects as an offensive lineman at the college level and is currently getting looks from a number of I-AA schools. "His potential is unlimited and he still hasn't finished growing," says Thurman, "he's athletic and he's a big broad kid. He's not fat an he's very physical up front."
"We run the ball probably 60% of the time from the spread and he rarely gives up sacks, but he run blocks very well too." Though Thurman loves the physical nature of Fulper's game, it's his mental approach that most impresses his coach. He makes all of the team's line calls and helped out his freshman quarterback last season by checking out of plays from his center position. "His biggest strength is his smarts. If they [the defense] gives us a shade look, he determines which way we are running it. I don't know if I could ask any more of him than I have."
His on-the-field intelligence should come as no surprise because Fulper carries a 4.2 grade point average and has already scored a 1200 on the SAT. "He's smarter than his coach, I'll tell you that," joked Thurman.
Ethan Winn is a 6-foot-4, 275-pound offensive and defensive tackle who not only has started alongside Fulper on the offensive line for three season but who also joins him at family reunions because the two are cousins.
"Ethan is the more physical of the two and he may be a bit stronger than Bennett," says Thurman who projects that Winn could play on either side of the ball in college, but will probably find himself playing defense at the next level.
"He likes to get out and mix it up, hit and get after people."
He didn't start on the defensive line until his junior season so Thurman thinks that Winn's best football days are still ahead of him. "We run a 3-3 defense so he is responsible for shooting gaps and penetrating. He's quick enough to get off the ball and get into the backfield and create havoc and he's working on his speed, so he should be more disruptive for us this season."
That should be a scary proposition for opponents considering that Winn recorded 9 sacks in 2007 including two in the state championship game.
Like his cousin, Ethan is an outstanding student currently carrying a 3.4 GPA.
Could the two find a home on the big stage at the college level? "It's hard to get DI schools to take a look at kids coming from a small school, but I think that they can play DI," says the coach.
